A Tabata Trial

AO: Windjammer

When: 04/28/2023

QIC: Irene

PAX (8): Caroline, Dipstick, Funyun, Milli Vanilli, Nair, Stu, Townie

Preamble:

It has been too long since I’ve been to the Windjammer, so when the call for Qs went out last week, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been debating a Tabata Q after seeing it on other Qs backblasts, so this felt like a good opportunity to run around Windward and try something out.

Warm-O-Rama:

A quick disclaimer was offered to the veteran Pax in attendance before we moseyed to the Dam to do the Thang. We assembled in front of the flag for SSH, Windmills, Imperial Walkers, Monkey Arms, and COVIDs.

The Thang:

So the theme of this workout is tabata – a burst of intense exercise with a short break afterward that is less than the time you worked hard for. We were going to do AMRAP exercises for 40s with a 20s break afterward. I roughly organized our exercises into four sets with merkins and moseying in between. Here’s how it went down:

Grab a coupon from the dam for our Tabata Arm Set:
Curls (40 on/20 rest)
Skullcrushers (40 on/20 rest)
OH Press (40 on/20 rest)
Return our coupons and mosey to the boat dock for the next set.

Before the next set though, Tabata Merkins (40 on/20 rest). The next set is our leg blast:
Jump Squats (40 on/20 rest)
Bonnie Blairs (40 on/20 rest)
Monkey Humpers (40 on/20 rest)
Whew… nobody likes Bonnie Blairs – feel the burn, but we mosey on to the sports park basketball court.

On the court, Merkin break – Tabata Ranger Merkins (40 on/20 rest) before our Ab set:
Leg Raises (40 on/20 rest)
J. Los (40 on/20 rest)
Captain Thors (40 on/20 rest)
Mosey break – to the gate and back.

Along with our mosey, we need a merkin break – Tabata Merkins (40 on/20 rest). Our final (planned) set – movement exercises:
Plank Jacks (40 on/20 rest)
Mountain Climbers (40 on/20 rest)
Freddie Mercuries (40 on/20 rest)
We had a planned run up the dam, but with the rain, the Q called an audible and took the long way back to the flagpole on the dam.

Lined up on the dam, we had a bit of extra time, so Q called a highlight set:
Pick your Merkin (40 on/20 rest)
Jump Squats (40 on/20 rest)
Plank Jacks (40 on/20 rest)
Mosey to the shovel flag.

Pax thought they’d made it back to the flag and were safe, but we can’t have a beatdown without burpees: Tabata Burpees (40 on/20 rest). Thus concluded the Q, but there was time for mary: Gas Pumpers, 1-legged Donkey Kicks, Copperhead Squats, Weedpickers, and American Hammers.

COT:

Next week is my 1 year anniversary: May the Fourth at Rubicon. Thank you for having me and making me feel a part of this community. It has been a great experience that I recommend to everyone. As always, it is an honor to lead.
