For those who weren’t running the Peachtree but wanted to make a down payment on Independence Day debauchery, YHC decided to offer up an alternative version of a 6.2 with a patriotic theme that may become an annual tradition. A 10k is hard enough, but what would it be like if we wrapped it up around a brutal beatdown? There is only one way to find out.
Warm-Up:
With 0700 on the clock, circle-up for some exercises while waiting for last-minute stragglers to roll in:
- 20 SSH’s
- 15 Weed-pickers
- 15 Hillbillys
The Thang:
After gathering Mad Dog, mosey along the main road toward the football field stadium to get things moving. In 1776, 13 colonies declared their independence by severing their political connections from Great Britain. In recognition, YHC led PAX on 13 rounds (reducing reps by 1 each round) countdown of the following exercises in decreasing rotation:
- 13 Incline Merkins
- 13 Step-Ups (each leg)
- 13 Decline Merkins
With a good lather built up, it was time to mosey to the playground (where we found Haggis) to start working on a Murph. YHC directed PAX to start with 4 rounds of the following:
- 10 Pull-Ups
- 20 Merkins
- 30 Squats
With nearly a half-Murph in the books, it was time to mosey back to the parking lot and begin the off-campus portion of the beat down. With 7 PAX on foot and Slim riding his bike, YHC led PAX on a flag-carrying mosey up Woodstock and down Canton Street toward Waller Park as our final destination. Flag rotation was the order of the day, with intermittent Mary stops to gather the six while the flag attendant performed air chair.
Now, I’m not sure exactly where this happened, but Chelsea’s wheels started falling off at some point on Canton Street. Thankfully, Slim (RESPECT) took one for the team and offered up the bike to keep our boy Chelsea in tow. At least that was the plan.
YHC continued to lead PAX (most of them, at least) across the Atlanta Street & Magnolia Intersection toward City Hall toward Oak Street. Turn down Oak Street and head for our final destination of Waller Park. Grand visions of a BD for the ages were quickly shelved in favor of getting the PAX back in one piece. Gather for the six at Waller Park gym and continue across the bridge up the hill toward Upper Waller where some coupon work would be in order.
With no sign of Chelsea (who was riding a bike for pete’s sake!) and Haggis, YHC directed PAX to fetch a coupon and circle-up for a round of Independence Day Jack Webbs – 1:4 Merkins to Overhead Press ratio, for a total of 10 rounds (10:40). After a quick survey of coupon choices, it was clear that an audible was needed – rotate coupons after each round. Judging by the coupons making the turn, there were at least 3 PAX who weren’t very happy with this decision.
After some quick hydration, return coupons and reverse course back to the Wreck while searching for Chelsea and Haggis. YHC believes that Slim had more than fleeting thoughts about stopping at Roswell PD on the return route to report a stolen bike.
PAX finally located Chelsea and Haggis on Canton St, where Slim was able to recover his preferred mode of transport. Plenty of honks and cheers on Canton St as PAX carried the flag back home to the Wreck, which was great to hear.
Continue working on Murph while waiting for the six to return.
Moleskin:
Very thankful to those PAX who joined today as we recognize and celebrate our independence as a country. Freedom is never free, and it’s truly an honor and pleasure to participate with (and be held accountable by) those that truly appreciate and revere how special it is to live in a nation like ours. Happy 4th.
AFLAC out.
