Apollo 11 Trivia
AO: The Rubicon
When: 07/16/2019
QIC: lumbergh
PAX (12): Lefty, Zima, Miller Time, Dunphy, Hoochie, Pitstop, Pinky, Heidi, Stifler, Trebek, Top Hat
Preamble:
It’s Monday night and the Q sheet sits empty for Rubicon. Inspiration strikes as I find that today is the anniversary of the launch of Saturn V taking Apollo 11 to the moon. I pick up the Q and see we have quite a few ready for pre run.
Six PAX come running in from all over after a trip almost takes Zima out but he powers through for the early mileage. Six more are ready for a BD.
Warm-O-Rama:
Mosey to the flag pole for 11 each of SSH, IW, Merkins, and Weed pickers. The first hint of the theme.
The Thang:
We head to the hill of dreams. Lefty correctly guesses that today is the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. We start with 11’s on the hill. Plank Jacks at the bottom, moon walk (or just backwards run) to the top for LBCs.
Moon trivia
In this game we split into two teams and I ask a numbers related question. Each team submits a guess. Both teams must do the number of exercises that they missed the answer by. For example, if I asked how many astronauts walked on the moon from Apollo 11 and you said 5 then you would do 3 burpees.
We change up the exercises with each question including burpees, merkins, big boys, squats, and freddy mercuries.
I don’t remember all the answers given but nothing was too punishing. Here is what we learned about this mission:
- Neil Armstrong was on the moon alone for 19 minutes before Buzz Aldrin joined him
- The two spent a total of 151 minutes together on the surface (Lots of freddy mercurys on this one)
- They spent a total of 21.5 hours on the moon before launching again (which was saved by a ball point pen)
- Neil walked 30 meters away from the module to collect samples and look at stuff
- 3 new MINERALS-not elements, my bad-were discovered on the moon (and later found on earth) -armalcolite, tranquillityite, pyroxferroite
- Command module (with Michael Collins onboard) did a total of 30 lunar orbits before returning
- They collected 47.5 lbs of material to bring home
- The total mission was 8 days (3 hours, 18 minutes, and 35 seconds)
- They spent 21 days in quarantine when they arrived home
- Saturn V was the rocket to launch (the only correct answer given)
A lap around the field and back to the flag for a share of mary

Top Hat VQ on Thursday and a personal invite to the Fight Night with Passion City Church on Thursday
Naked-Man Moleskin:
Here are the words that Buzz Aldrin radioed home before preparing his moon walk
“This is the LM pilot. I’d like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way”
Always a pleasure to lead at Rubicon.
