UMass – VQ…Storm lived up to its name
AO: The Storm
When: 07/09/2022
QIC: Todd Doherty l F3 UMass
PAX (5): Ace Ventura, Crab Cake, Swiper, Valley Girl
Preamble:
On Friday, while at Jericho in the COT, @snowman challenged the PAX to Q….particularly to get your VQ done. I’m pretty sure he was looking right at me when he said this….and may have even pointed and called out my name….just sayin.
So what’s a HIM to do? Well, step up an Q the next day at The Storm! I studied the process, the exercise names, read the Q source (thanks @valley girl for reminding me and sending the Qsource link) and wrote out a plan. Yep, I even printed it to have with me for the Q.
Warm-O-Rama:
We started our ruck and ran up the parking deck inclines to warm up….alternating forward and backward running each incline to the top.
Using the highest deck as the protection from the pouring rain we did a little warm up:
- 15 Side straddle hops
- 15 Willey Mays Hays
- 15 Weed pickers
- 15 Moroccan night clubs
- 15 Chinooks
The Thang:
Q Source:
- Candor (Q3.8)
- First of the 5 F3 Leadership Virtues…different than the Leadership Skills…both create a Virtuous leader
- The reason I am Q today is because of Candor. Snowman’s candor to let me know it was time I Q’d
- Successful Leaders = VAPE (Vision, Articulation, Persuasion and Exhortation (appeal & encouragement)
- Candor is a belief in the existence of truth
- Truth does not change over time….it is true yesterday, today and tomorrow (we need water to survive, etc.)
- The person may change but Truth never does
- Candor is the hard truth…based on its effect (plane is on time, 1st class upgrade vs. cancelled flight until tomorrow)
- Love others too much to tell them lies
- Also, don’t wait for the truth to be told…go find it. An “open door policy” doesn’t work. Many will not have the Candor that you expect.
CHARGE = Have Candor. Tell others the truth, every time, every day. This becomes what you are known for and admired for
The plan was to have a nice long ruck and continue the discussion on the Q Source around Candor. Nature had other plans as we crossed the street to the trail. It began to pour rain and thunder. 2-3 thunders seemed distant. Heavy rain came, then louder thunder, then the flashes. I called that we mosey back to the parking deck and hit some alternate exercises there.
Well, there goes my well written plan…out the window.
The PAX stuck with it and chipped in to fill in suggestions as I winged it with squats, merkins, and star jumps….and a few more I can’t remember.
We rucked up to the top of the parking deck and back down again.
Post Ruck:
25 flutters
25 Dollys
25 WWI sit-ups

Naked-Man Moleskin:
I learned a bit today….
- Qing is harder than it looks. The regular Qs we have are pros and make it look easy. Much respect.
- The PAX leave no man behind, including the VQ who needs a little help
- You can have the best plan written down but the real world makes sure that you are humbled by making your plan obsolete.
- Every F1, F2 and F3 event I attend makes me a better man and respect the guys I’m with more and more.
Thank you for following my lead today. It was a true honor.
