Preamble:

For stop #2 on my “Farewell to Rehab” tour it was a stop at my home AO, The Norseman! It is always a pleasure to lead this group of men so I looked forward to a bit of musical education for Dr. Rico.

Warm-O-Rama:

Disclaimer and Dr. Rico is already here? How did that happen? 2 FNGs so I gave the extended version. Mosey up the hill to the big parking lot where Truck Norris was waiting with 19 girlfriends and a college playlist queued up.

Song Number 1 is “Whip It” by DEVO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_QLzthSkfM From Akron, Ohio, Whip It was DEVO’s 1980 hit that gave them main stream popularity. But not with Dr. Rico apparently.

For warm-o-rama during Whip It:

  • SSH
  • Weed Pickers
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Sprinter stretch

The Thang:

Musical Dora

Grab a partner and one girlfriend for each pair. PAX one runs the parking lot while the other does the exercise for that song AMRAP. When PAX one returns, PAX 2 runs and 1 does the exercise. New song, new exercises

Song number 2 Exercise is Kettle Bell Swings… and Dr. Rico still has not heard anything he knows yet but most of the PAX are well aquainted with “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits. Dire Straits is a Britsh band that formed in 1977 and had thier first single “Sultans of Swing” in 1978. Here is the classic music video for Money for Nothing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTP2RUD_cL0 MTV ruled in the 80s! AND they actually played music videos!

Song number 3 Exercise is Hammer Curls… and Dr. Rico doesn’t know David Bowie? Song is “China Girl”. David was born in England in 1947 and China Girl charted in 1983. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YC3sTbAPcU

Song Number 4 Exercise is Squat Jump w/ girlfriend. Finally Dr. Rico knows one of my songs. I don’t blame Dr. Rico. It has to be poor upbringing. But “You Dropped the Bomb on Me” is the first song you know? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17lkdqoLt44 (this one is a must see!) The Gap Band consisted of 3 brothers and was named after streets (Greenwood, Archer, and Pine) in remembrance of the Tulsa race massacre in the historic Greenwood neighborhood in the brothers’ hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We dropped some bombs on the jump squats and moved on to:

Song Number 5 Exercise is Overhead Press. “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrGw_cOgwa8  Boy if you want classic 80s MTV, this is IT! Another Englishman, Robert was born in 1949. And 2 dozen or so identical dancing models.

Song Number 6 Exercise is Burpee with a jump over the girlfriend on every rep. The song is “She Blinded Me With Science” by Thomas Dolby. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V83JR2IoI8k  This is the kind of song that TMI (Tickle Me Ivories) aught to love! So many synths. Great 80s sound. She blinded me, with science! Thomas Dolby built his first synthesizer in the mid 70s and the rest is history.

Song Number 7 Exercise is Lunge with girlfriend. Another college favorite, “Centerfold” by J. Geils Band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqDjMZKf-wg The band was formed in 1967 in Worcester, MA under the leadership of guitarist John “J” Geils. Centerfold was released in 1981.

Song Number 8 Exercise Overhead Press. Yes again. I have come to pump you up. Song is “Just What I Needed” by The Cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5-rdr0qhWk released in 1978. You know, the Staples commercial song! Now I was not in college until the fall of 1979 after this song was released but my college roommate was a guitarist and played all the time with The Cars records in our dorm room.  And he was good! I can’t think about my freshman year without remembering The Cars. The Cars were formed in Boston in 1976 and rode the New Wave movement in music into the 80s.

Song Number 9 Exercise Merkins. Song “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson. The 6:05 version. Cause you have to get enough. Merkins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yURRmWtbTbo No early 80s college playlist would be complete without MJ. Do you realize how many songs he released as singles in the late 70s and early 80s? A bunch. This song was released in 1979 and his albumns (you know, vinyl?) were spinning through my college tour. This song is from the “Off The Wall” albumn, his first with producer Quincy Jones. He release 4 singles from this albumn:

  1. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” Released: July 10, 1979
  2. “Rock with You” Released: November 3, 1979
  3. “Off the Wall” Released: February 2, 1980
  4. “She’s Out of My Life” Released: April 18, 1980

The “Thriller” albumn was released in 1982 and had 7 !! singles:

  1. “The Girl Is Mine” Released: October 18, 1982
  2. “Billie Jean” Released: January 2, 1983
  3. “Beat It” Released: February 14, 1983
  4. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” Released: May 8, 1983
  5. “Human Nature” Released: July 3, 1983
  6. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” Released: September 19, 1983
  7. “Thriller” Released: November 2, 1983

MJ ruled back then!

We talked about doing hard things and teaching our kids to face hard things. It could be a workout at 5:30, or a presentation at work, a releationship with your M or co-worker. What hard thing do you need to tackle today? Get after it.
